Furfural to <scp>FDCA</scp> : systematic process design and techno?economic evaluation

2,5-Furan dicarboxylic acid (FDCA) is a promising intermediate for producing polyethylene furan dicarboxylate, an alternative to terephthalate that combines significantly lower greenhouse gas footprint with better mechanical and barrier properties. This work presents process design techno-economic evaluation FDCA from non-edible biomass via the oxidation of furfural furoate salt, subsequent carboxylation furandicarboxylate salt. Major technical uncertainties are associated possible polymerization in step state salt phase step. Based on market price $1400/ton this requires minimum selling 2000 ± 500 $/ton FDCA. To compete purified terephthalic (PTA), it premium 100% performance sustainability, or combination much cheaper capital expenditures (CAPEX). © 2021 Society Chemical Industry John Wiley & Sons, Ltd
